Sittning

Sittning

Morning. Im so shleepy. Stayed round Mariam’s last night till really late. Elsa and Em where there too to start with but they left after a while. Mariam and I spent the afternoon organizing (or trying to organizing) a “sittning.” As I’ve understood it its what they do at the Uni’s here. You get a group of people together and go for a three course meal before hitting the clubs. It’s a bit of a change from Glasgow. There you get a group of people together, get as willied as you can possibly manage during a game of flip-cup, Kings or true America and then hit the clubs. Alls paths lead to Rome. Don’t get me wrong I’m rather fond of the Glaswegian ways but I’m looking forward to a bit of variety. Hopefully this will be a chance to see a lot of friends from Sweden whom I haven’t had a chance to meet up with yet. So if you are reading this and live in the proximity of Lund’s University (and know me relatively well) COME!

Mum using slang
- Oh dear god, my mum just walked out the door shouting “see you later peeps.”  I’m not the best with slang, I can’t get away with half of it, but my mum really cant pull any of it without emitting tsunami size cringe waves. –

Anyway todays plan is going to revolve around mooching around the house so that I can let a bunch of men in (read the end of the sentence before jumping to conclusions) so that they can drop of a machine for my dad’s gym.
But more importantly I need to get hold of a student guest ID so that I can go out with Mariam tomorrow. First time out in Sweden in a long time, should be good!

Gloating

I am up extra early so that I can lounge around in my pajamas and gloat about the fact that I don’t have to head out to school/work today. I intend to sprawl snug as a smug slug (if slugs can sprawl) on the sofa and wave the rest of my family out the door. Hihi.
Unfortunately I still have exams to revise for so today is still a dedicated study day. At least these exams
are nowhere near as bad as the ones I had to sit this time last year. IB exams…yuck. The frantic cramming, the impending doom as they got closer and closer, the panic.  Looking back it’s hard to remember what all the fuss was about. My 18 year-old self would castrate me for saying something like that mind.
Still the exams I have now still matter so I’m prepping with a hearty breakfast and like I said, a bit of gloating, to put me in the mood for a good study sesh.

Sunny Monday

I was actually woken up by having blinding sunlight hit my face this morning, how nice isn’t that? So I lay in my bed and pretend it was summer for a while and then got my act together and went for a run with mum and the dog. My mum wanted to show me a house her and dad are “thinking of buying.” I know, and she knows, (even the dog probably knows) that this is never going to happen. I think they like the idea of “potentially buying a house,” more than they actually want a new house. My tummy wasnt too happy about the run considering the chocolate cramming session me and the siblings engaged in last night in front of Prison Break (great series, why have I never watched it before?) Oh, and I might just take the time to brag about the fact that I was indeed the first person to find all her easter eggs yesterdays *hold for applause.*

Clearly the weather inspired not only me but my mum too as she is now busy looking up holiday destination. This means the annual bid for various destinations has began. Everyone has a very different idea of what a “relaxing holiday” entails. The two polar extremes are my dad and my sister. If my sister had it her way she would have a holiday where we all lay flat on our backs and burnt to a crisp in the sun for two weeks. If my dad could design the holiday, we would be up at the crack of dawn to visit 4 museums and an art gallery before breakfast. To be honest it doesn’t much matter what they want as my mum tends to win the holiday argument and it currently looks as if we are heading to Rhodes.
No arguments here quite like the sound of Rhodes. It may mean I will be seeing a lot of Greek islands this year as one of the potential destinations for my football team’s holiday is Crete. Its between that and Turkey. To be honest I would probably prefer Crete as I was in Turkey just two years ago and its been a while since I was in Greece.  Doesn’t matter at all that Rhodes and Crete are both Greek Islands as I reckon going on holiday with my family is going to be a tad different from going on holiday with my football team. I get so EXCITED about planning summer holidays!!

Påsk Pyssel

Todays meisterwerk! The pot for the best creations was a 100kr (10 pounds) - my dad won. Fair enough as it was his money anyway.

Easter Sunday

My dad is all excited about having cleared out the garage in order to start making a home gym. He is so enthusiastic that he got up early this morning to use it, my mum and I joined him. This decision had nothing to do with an intention to exercise and everything to do with wanting to have a good giggle at my dad’s expense. It’s Easter Sunday so we had a rare “everybody sits down together breakfast” this doesn’t happen in my family because we never tend to be up or in at the same time in the mornings.  We had a short break from eating where we went for a walk but returned home rather swiftly in time for lunch. Holidays at my house center very much around the dining table, we don’t seem to be able to spend too much time away from it, we are making a valiant effort this afternoon though as we are about to go Easter egg hunting (I may be 19 but never too old for an Easter egg hunt) after which its time for Easter arts and crafts (I believe I mentioned my mum was big on celebrating holidays thoroughly). Swedish provides a much better word for “arts and crafts” namely: “pyssla.” For those that don’t know my parents are Scottish, I was born and lived in England for three years and then we all trooped over to Sweden, which is where I grew up. I only moved back to Scotland last September for my first year of Uni. Oh Easter egg hunt is about to begin, better get moving. Wouldn’t want the siblings to beat me.

Ads and Equality?

I came across an article in the daily mail that was celebrating “how far social attitudes have changed for the better, particularly in regard to the relationship between men and women.” I am sure this is true, we have come a long way in the last few decades with regards to equality between men and women. However the focus of the article was sexist advertisements that  were widespread in the madmen era  that “would undoubtedly cause widespread revulsion today.” Iv'e posted some of the examples given by the article and matched them with a 21st century counter part. The Dailymail article is absolutely right, I do feel revulsion when looking at the ads. But do I feel any better when confronted with their 21st century equivalents? Nope.

Women clearly belong under mens' feet.

Wear the right trousers and you'll have no problem conquering your women.

Real men can drive/control their women

Wheey even we can use these products ladies!

Gang-rape FTW!

Advertisements as a vindication of gender equality? Hardly.
